A nut-free twist on the classic childhood snack, featuring crunchy celery, creamy sunflower seed butter, and sweet raisins. Ready in under 10 minutes, it’s perfect for school lunches, after-school snacks, and allergy-friendly gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 46 large celery stalks, washed and cut into 34 inch pieces
  • ¼ cup sunflower seed butter (or more as needed)
  • ¼ cup raisins (about 34 per celery piece)
  • Optional: cinnamon, chia seeds, hemp seeds, mini chocolate chips, shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the celery. Rinse each stalk under cold running water, scrubbing gently to remove any dirt or grit. Pat them completely dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  2. Trim and cut the celery. Lay each stalk on your cutting board. Use a sharp knife to trim off the white ends and any leafy tops. Cut the stalks into 3- to 4-inch pieces. For younger kids, cut them shorter—about 2 inches.
  3. Spread the sunflower seed butter. Take a piece of celery and hold it steady on the cutting board. Using a butter knife or small spatula, scoop about 1 to 2 teaspoons of sunflower seed butter and spread it into the groove of the celery. Aim for a layer that’s about ¼-inch thick. Repeat with all the celery pieces.
  4. Add the raisins. Place 3 to 4 raisins on top of the sunflower seed butter, pressing them down gently so they stick. Arrange them in a line down the center of the celery groove. If using any optional toppings like chia seeds or cinnamon, sprinkle them on now.
  5. Serve immediately or chill. These are best enjoyed right away while the celery is still cold and crunchy. If making ahead, place them in a single layer in an airtight container lined with a paper towel. Refrigerate for up to 4 hours.
  6. Pro tip for meal prep: Wash and cut the celery ahead of time and store it in a container of water in the fridge. When ready to serve, drain, pat dry, and assemble. It takes less than 2 minutes per serving.

Notes

Keep celery cold for maximum crunch. Don’t overspread the sunflower seed butter—a thin, even layer is best. For picky eaters, use a vegetable peeler to remove stringy fibers from the celery. Fresh sunflower seed butter makes a big difference; check expiration and stir well before using.
