These Spooky Severed Finger Hot Dogs with Almond Nails are a fun, creepy Halloween snack that looks like severed fingers. Made with simple ingredients like hot dogs and almonds, they’re perfect for parties and guaranteed to be a conversation starter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (8-10) all-beef hot dogs (e.g., Hebrew National or Nathan’s Famous)
  • 8–10 whole almonds (raw or roasted, unsalted)
  • Ketchup (e.g., Heinz)
  • Yellow mustard (optional, e.g., French’s)
  • 8–10 hot dog buns (regular or split-top)
  • Lettuce leaves (for serving, optional)
  • Extra ketchup (for blood splatter effect, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the hot dogs: Cut each hot dog in half crosswise to create two ‘fingers.’ Using a sharp paring knife, make 2-3 shallow diagonal cuts on one side of each half for knuckles. Make a small, shallow slit at the rounded end of each half for the almond nail.
  2. Insert the almond nails: Gently press a whole almond, pointed end first, into the slit at the end of each hot dog half until about half of the almond is visible. If loose, use a tiny dab of ketchup to ‘glue’ it in place.
  3. Cook the fingers: Pan-fry in a non-stick skillet over medium heat with a splash of oil or butter for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and heated through. Alternatively, boil in water for 4-5 minutes until plump.
  4. Prepare the buns: Lightly toast the hot dog buns in a toaster, under the broiler, or in a dry skillet for about 1 minute.
  5. Assemble the severed fingers: Place each cooked hot dog finger into a toasted bun. Drizzle ketchup over the exposed ‘severed’ end, letting it pool on the bun. Add a tiny dab of yellow mustard to the ketchup and swirl for a realistic blood effect. Optionally, add ketchup drips on the knuckles.
  6. Create the presentation: Line a serving platter with lettuce leaves. Arrange the assembled fingers on top. Drizzle extra ketchup around the platter for a blood splatter effect. Scatter a few whole almonds for extra creepiness.

Notes

For best results, use all-beef hot dogs. Avoid turkey or chicken hot dogs as they shrink and wrinkle. If almond nails fall off during cooking, dip the almond tip in ketchup before inserting. Do not use an air fryer. Prep the hot dogs (cut knuckles and insert almonds) up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate. Cook just before serving.
