A quick and easy taco recipe perfect for a cozy date night, featuring a smoky, tangy marinade and fresh toppings. Ready in about 30 minutes, designed specifically for two people.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz (225 g) skirt steak or flank steak, thinly sliced (can substitute with chicken breast)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (extra virgin recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 small red onion, finely diced
  • 1 ripe avocado, sliced
  • 12 fresh limes, cut into wedges
  • Crumbled queso fresco or feta cheese (optional)
  • Fresh jalapeño slices (optional)
  • 4 small corn or flour tortillas (warmed before serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marinade by combining olive oil, lime juice, minced garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Whisk until blended.
  2. Add the thinly sliced steak to the marinade, toss to coat evenly, cover and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes (minimum 10 minutes if short on time).
  3. While the meat marinates, chop cilantro, dice red onion, slice avocado, and cut lime wedges. Arrange toppings on a platter.
  4. Heat a non-stick skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat until hot.
  5. Add the marinated steak in a single layer, cooking about 2 minutes per side until browned and cooked to preference. Remove from heat and let rest for a few minutes.
  6. Warm the tortillas in the same skillet or a clean pan for about 30 seconds per side until soft and pliable.
  7. Assemble tacos by dividing the cooked steak between tortillas and topping with cilantro, onion, avocado, queso fresco, jalapeño slices, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
  8. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Slice steak thinly against the grain for tenderness. Marinate at least 10-20 minutes for best flavor. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure a good sear. Rest meat before assembling tacos to lock in juices. Warm tortillas to prevent breakage. For dairy-free, skip cheese or use plant-based alternatives. Can substitute steak with chicken, shrimp, or pork. Add chipotle in adobo for extra spice.
